Snowmobiling outside of Vail

What better way to take a break from the slopes then to go snowmobiling! After indulging in the powder we have been blessed with here at Vail the past two weeks, my knees and back were aching for a break. With some out of town guests to entertain we headed out of Vail on Highway 26 towards Leadville. We ended up at Alpine Tours – a local snowmobiling and dog sledding outfit. With both novice and long-time snowmobilers in our group I was nervous they would not be able to accommodate our various needs. To my pleasant surprise, however, the guides were fantastic and catered to our group with great enthusiasm. The views along our ride were breath taking and we were able to explore so much terrain on the sleds. Alpine Tours was very reasonably priced and the service was excellent. They are also known for the exceptional care they give to their sled dogs. We could not have been happier with our day off from skiing!

Rain?

Something happened in February this year, something that has not happened for a long time: it rained all day long. It was miserable with rain falling all day in the middle of February. However most of the rain was snow on the mountains and managed to accumulate 8 inches. Excited for a powder I headed out only to find the powder to be very heavy, wet and slow. The only good powder was very high up and you had to go through the slow stuff at the end. Powder is not fun when its heavy and wet and near impossible to ride through. I am glad we got the snow but wish it could have been colder.

Wonderful Weather

Waking up to a beautiful blue sky and temperatures in the 40’s one would think that it is March or even April. To my surprise and delight it was only February and it just seems like the spring. The past couple of days have been fantastic weather. The snow is obviously not deep powder but it is great spring snow. The weather permits you to wear sweatshirts instead of jackets and best of all being able to get out the sunglasses rather than the goggles. There is nothing more than enjoying a meal up on the top of the mountain and being able to sit outside and look out the back bowls of Vail. It is truly amazing. The weather calls for more snow and that is fine by me. I will take these “spring” days in the middle of winter any day.
