Mother nature seems to be answering prayers this week with a blast of snow storms blowing through the area. Relentless as she can be, we keep getting buried in snow here in Lake Tahoe. Tourists, and locals alike, are thrilled for the fresh powder to cover Heavenly Ski Resort. We have had a very good season to date and expect the fresh lines and great turns to continue up until the closing of the resort. It is now time for your ski and snowboard rentals to be tuned, because you won’t want to stop and take care of them at all this week. The forecast for Northern California looks to be soaked in precipitation = the frozen kind! I just skiied at the resort Sierra-at-Tahoe and it was almost completely ready, and by ready, I mean that you can pretty much jump off of any rock or obstacle in front of you without worry. It usually takes a bit longer for this phenomenon to occur but this season we are just about there. For those novice skiers, fresh snow means a softer landing when you fall while learning to not catch those unforgivable edges. We are all blessed here in Tahoe and mother nature seems to be seconding that notion. Hope you all have an amazing week and keep those ski tips up!!

Christmas came and went, now South Lake Tahoe is gearing up for a great New Years celebration. The town is swarming with tourists and the mountains are covered with plenty of the white stuff, so it’s time to ring in the new year and welcome a fresh decade. The forecast for this week is looking good, so get those ski and snowboard rentals waxed and ready for Heavenly Ski Resort. Stateline, NV is preparing for a serious celebration. Montbleau Casino is hosting a variety of parties, as well as Harrah’s and Harvey’s Casinos. With so much to do, one is posed with the question of which parties to attend? If you are looking for a crazy time, one could just head down to the State-line and join all of the revelers in the streets. As for me, I am going to have a few folks over to my house for an old-fashioned BBQ and some drinks. Whatever you may choose, be safe, have fun, and Happy New Year!

Ask and you shall receive. Heavenly gets a fresh coating of the white stuff. Last night almost a foot of fresh snow dumped on the Lake Tahoe mountains. I guess everyone was praying extra hard in the Tahoe Basin because we were answered with lots of frozen precipitation and more is on the way. Get your ski and snowboard rentals out of the garage because it looks like we are shaping up for a pretty good winter season. Heavenly has now been open for two weeks and is quickly opening more runs each day for guests to ski. I for one am extremely excited to see the snow on the hill again, and I can’t wait to get up and make some more fresh turns. Keep praying South Lake Tahoe, it’s working!

Wow what a scene. Halloween at Heavenly gets pretty crazy. Most of the Freaks come out at night, but in this case the daytime and at night. Multiple clubs in South Lake Tahoe have huge Halloween shin-digs but the Freaker’s Ball seems to top them all. Folks from every walk of life seem to come out of the wood-work and celebrate this amazing holiday. Not just the crazy young kids but housewives and clergies all have fun in the scene. No other holiday do we get to dress up as any wicked thing we can think of, (the more wicked the better), women parade around in thongs, and everyone who isn’t in costume is the weirdo. The two main spots of this madness is the Montbleu and Harrah’s casinos. Their clubs get packed with party-goers and all the happy revelers they can fit to capacity. This year I was the 70s one-piece suited skier with my four snow bunnies to escort me anywhere I went, it was a blast. Honestly, I am just ready for the snow to fall and break my ski and snowboard rentals out of the closet. Halloween always marks the “where the hell is the snow” conversations and this year is no different! We are all praying for the white stuff and hopefully the skies will provide it sooner than later.

One of the most important features of a car in Heavenly valley that gets neglected, the tires, can really make a difference in the life of a car. Living in South Lake Tahoe, you really have to pay attention to your tire tread and be aware of how worn it is. How little is too little, this is the big question. This really is essential during the winter months and to ensure a safe ride around town. Many locals will find themselves trying to push the life of the tire further than it should safely go. Just last year, on New Years Eve, I was guilty of such a mentality. I was driving out of a shopping center and the snow burms had been built to the point where one could not see around the corner. At about five miles an hour, I came around the enbankment to find another truck directly in front of me. I pumped my brakes and low and behold I skidded right into her. I tried my hardest to steer out of the way but to no avail, we connected and it was a headache. Later that night I inspected my truck, and the tires, and I realized that it was all due to the lack of tread. Luckily none of my new ski or snowboard rentals were in the truck or they would have been destroyed. So, word to the wise = Check your tires and make sure you replace the ones that need it, it could save you a huge headache or even your life in the future.

How would you like to go skiing or snowboarding in North Texas in the middle of the summer? Snow/Sport Entertainment Ltd. has preliminarily started a new project called Texas Alps in Grapevine. Texas Alps is described as a 590-foot indoor ski slope, part of a 250,000 square foot facility proposed near the Grapevine Mills shopping mall north of DFW Airport. In addition to the ski slope, Texas Alps would also have an indoor ice climbing wall and luge track. The $70 million project will take about two years to complete and is said to be the first phase of World Villages of Grapevine, billed as a “one-of-a-kind entertainment venue.” This isn’t the first “ski slope project” planned in the Texas. Several years ago, officals announced the BearFire resort, near Fort Worth. The project was slated for completion in 2009 although no recent developments have been announced.
Currently, three such operations are under construction in Las Vegas, New Jersey and in North Carolina. In addition, there are several indoor ski facilities in a number of foreign countries, including France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom. Perhaps we are behind the times in creating indoor wintersports facilitiers.
As indoor ski slopes become a more accepted phenomena, I wonder how this will affect the ski resort industry. People, inparticular, Texans, may be less likely to visit their favorite resorts because of these man-made facilities. Another view is that these facilities will help novice skiers advance their abilities before the hit the “real” slopes. Thus, increasing safety and bringing a larger pool of winter sports enthusiasts to our North American resorts. I believe that making the sport of skiing more accessible for the “average joe” will have a positive implication on the ski industry as a whole. From increased tourist dollars to more ski rentals on the hill, the more popular skiing and snowboarding become, the better.

In South Lake Tahoe, these days, it seems like everyone has a dog. Big, small, short, and tall, our curious canines come in all shapes and sizes. This is one of the many aspects that makes Tahoe such a special place to live. Just yesterday, I took my dogs to “Secret Beach” on the South Shore. We played in the water and laid on the beach until the staple pastel Tahoe sunset ushered us home. Where else can you walk out your door, walk your dogs through a pristine marsh, into an amazing pine forest, and wind up at an immaculate beach? Every time, Tahoe is the first place that comes to mind. I can’t wait until the snow begins to fall and my dogs get to prance through untouched powder fields. That could be one of the happiest moments in my dogs’ lives. I think this year I will get some brand new ski rentals, hook my Huskie up to a climbing harness, and fly across the snow. Sometimes I wish we could fly down the beautiful ski runs at Heavenly Ski Resort and turn heads. She is amazing in the back country too. Whenever I get a chance we head to the West End of South Lake, to Christmas Valley, for some easily accessible “Off Piste,” skiing. After a hefty hike to the top of “Water-House,” a local spot, she leads the way back to the car. Once tucked away in the back of my truck, she immediately crashes, and I have to wake her up just to get into the house. Its funny how our dogs really brighten our days and help us get out and enjoy life. Thanks little buddies.
