How would you like to go skiing or snowboarding in North Texas in the middle of the summer? Snow/Sport Entertainment Ltd. has preliminarily started a new project called Texas Alps in Grapevine. Texas Alps is described as a 590-foot indoor ski slope, part of a 250,000 square foot facility proposed near the Grapevine Mills shopping mall north of DFW Airport. In addition to the ski slope, Texas Alps would also have an indoor ice climbing wall and luge track. The $70 million project will take about two years to complete and is said to be the first phase of World Villages of Grapevine, billed as a “one-of-a-kind entertainment venue.” This isn’t the first “ski slope project” planned in the Texas. Several years ago, officals announced the BearFire resort, near Fort Worth. The project was slated for completion in 2009 although no recent developments have been announced.
Currently, three such operations are under construction in Las Vegas, New Jersey and in North Carolina. In addition, there are several indoor ski facilities in a number of foreign countries, including France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom. Perhaps we are behind the times in creating indoor wintersports facilitiers.
As indoor ski slopes become a more accepted phenomena, I wonder how this will affect the ski resort industry. People, inparticular, Texans, may be less likely to visit their favorite resorts because of these man-made facilities. Another view is that these facilities will help novice skiers advance their abilities before the hit the “real” slopes. Thus, increasing safety and bringing a larger pool of winter sports enthusiasts to our North American resorts. I believe that making the sport of skiing more accessible for the “average joe” will have a positive implication on the ski industry as a whole. From increased tourist dollars to more ski rentals on the hill, the more popular skiing and snowboarding become, the better.

Heavenly Ski Resort could be one the most versatile and exciting mountain retreats in the Sierra. Winter, Summer, Spring, and Fall, Heavenly constantly provides thrills for folks of all ages. Summers in Lake Tahoe, surprisingly, are almost as busy if not as clustered with people as the Winter season. In 2008, Heavenly Ski Resort constructed “The Heavenly Flyer,” a ZipRider experience, which is an elevated zip line cable that takes you on an exhilarating descent from the top of Tamarack Express back to Adventure Peak, a vertical drop of 525 feet. At 3300 feet in length, the Heavenly flyer is the longest ZipRider in the lower 48 states. Besides the rock wall and numerous accessible hiking trails at the summit of the gondola, Heavenly staff have made their mountain a matrimonial hotspot. At the top of the Gun-Barrel Express, lies a gorgeous view and a great platform in which multiple couples state their vows and dedicate their lives to each other, with the back-drop of Lake Tahoe blessing the experience. Memories that will create and define their relationship, and I couldn’t think of a better spot. Soon after, the leaves and pine needles begin to fall and the real reason most people visit and live in this special area, come back to light. Then, the snow begins drifting across the roads and before you know it we are immersed in fields of white fluff. And at last, our amazing Ski Resorts open for business and tourists have their Heavenly Ski Rentals strapped on for some effortless powder turns. Its no wonder why so many people keep returning and many more find themselves carving out a spot to call home in this rare alpine Shang-ri-la.

After a short weekend trip to Napa, I returned home to find my house and cars covered in a thick layer of pollen. After settling in, I decided to hose off the cars and the house. During this lengthy endeavor, I found myself in the midst of an allergy attack. I retreated inside for some relief from my growing congestion and checked the status of some heavenly ski rentals I have posted for sale online. Amazingly, a couple of sets of ski rentals have drawn interest from several different people. It’s amazing that even in the dead heat of Summer amidst a pollen blast, Tahoe locals are already looking for deals on old ski rentals.

So it was Father’s Day and I decided to go for a ride down Jackie Chan’s chinese downhill. As I was getting my gear together, I remembered i had thrown out my old MTB shoes. Eager to ride, I had to stop by a local Heavenly ski rental shop to pick myself up a new pair of shoes. Pleasantly surprised when an employee, Jay, helped me find a great shoe. My gripe is that this was the only shoe that they had in my size. Nonetheless, I decided to spend the $120 and get to the trailhead. I’ve always used sneaker-style spd MTB shoes, and wasn’t to excited about these new Specialized XC Comp shoes. But when I got on trail, they felt so natural and were so lightweight. They gave me extra stability and increased climbing efficiency. After mobbing down the trail, I passed that same Heavenly ski rental shop and had no regrets about my recent purchase.

Right outside my backdoor lies South Tahoe’s premiere recreation area, Bijou State Park. Within this park there is a 9 hole municipal golf course, a 36 hole frisbee golf course, a skatepark and many playgrounds. As a take my son here quite often, I recently noticed that the city sells advertising on plaques at each individual hole. Ranging from Heavenly ski rental shops to local burger spots, many area businesses get the word out about their services. As usual, at about 3PM, it starts to dump rain as I stroll back towards my residence. I see golfers hiding underneath trees to avoid being soaked. I also notice that the entire face of Heavenly Ski Resort is completely melted. My mind drifts and I think of all the scavengers that will comb the ski resort to retrieve everything from lost sunglasses and glove to cash and Heavenly Ski Rentals.

Unseasonably wet weather has affected the Tahoe Basin for several weeks now. Keeping temperatures well below average and furthermore helping preserve the Sierra snowpack. While this may delay the opening of many area mountain bike trails, I am pleased to still see snow on the mountains. The famous “t” on Mt. Tallac has retained much snow to date and most tributaries are still heavily flowing. All been said, I believe the snowy mountains will keep Californians thinking about next ski season. A few Heavenly ski rental shops have closed due the recent recession, however many local ski companies keep high expectations for the coming ski season. If all turns out right, we might just be renting some Heavenly ski rentals next year!!!
