A good friend of mine that works for Tahoe’s largest resort, has gone on an extended trip to South America to recruit employees for next ski season. She will travel to Santiago, Chile, to Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Now this is confusing to me because 99% of the people recruited have now little to no skiing ability and zero on-snow experience. I don’t understand my major U.S. resorts, particularly in California, recruit non-english speaking, inexperienced workers to operate the majority of mountain facilities and services.
On a different note, the recruitment team was also traveling with several hundred sets of ski rentals that would be sold to area ski shops in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Whats interesting is that they will sell those rentals for more than they paid plus they have 3+ years of usage. Its amazing that new equipment and technology don’t reach the southern hemisphere for years after they are initially developed. It seems quite profitable to start a company that delivers old Ski Rentals from the U.S. to less developed countries.

After a short weekend trip to Napa, I returned home to find my house and cars covered in a thick layer of pollen. After settling in, I decided to hose off the cars and the house. During this lengthy endeavor, I found myself in the midst of an allergy attack. I retreated inside for some relief from my growing congestion and checked the status of some heavenly ski rentals I have posted for sale online. Amazingly, a couple of sets of ski rentals have drawn interest from several different people. It’s amazing that even in the dead heat of Summer amidst a pollen blast, Tahoe locals are already looking for deals on old ski rentals.

So it was Father’s Day and I decided to go for a ride down Jackie Chan’s chinese downhill. As I was getting my gear together, I remembered i had thrown out my old MTB shoes. Eager to ride, I had to stop by a local Heavenly ski rental shop to pick myself up a new pair of shoes. Pleasantly surprised when an employee, Jay, helped me find a great shoe. My gripe is that this was the only shoe that they had in my size. Nonetheless, I decided to spend the $120 and get to the trailhead. I’ve always used sneaker-style spd MTB shoes, and wasn’t to excited about these new Specialized XC Comp shoes. But when I got on trail, they felt so natural and were so lightweight. They gave me extra stability and increased climbing efficiency. After mobbing down the trail, I passed that same Heavenly ski rental shop and had no regrets about my recent purchase.

Right outside my backdoor lies South Tahoe’s premiere recreation area, Bijou State Park. Within this park there is a 9 hole municipal golf course, a 36 hole frisbee golf course, a skatepark and many playgrounds. As a take my son here quite often, I recently noticed that the city sells advertising on plaques at each individual hole. Ranging from Heavenly ski rental shops to local burger spots, many area businesses get the word out about their services. As usual, at about 3PM, it starts to dump rain as I stroll back towards my residence. I see golfers hiding underneath trees to avoid being soaked. I also notice that the entire face of Heavenly Ski Resort is completely melted. My mind drifts and I think of all the scavengers that will comb the ski resort to retrieve everything from lost sunglasses and glove to cash and Heavenly Ski Rentals.

Depending on the weather, Whistler and Blackcomb mountains have lost most of their snow by July or August. That’s a great time to explore the mountain on foot or by mountain bike. It’s amazing how different the mountain looks when there’s no snow on it. See if you can identify your favorite runs, see if you can even access some of them without the packed snow on them. Head to the former Whistler ski shop now bike or hike shop, grab a trail map and enjoy.

Unseasonably wet weather has affected the Tahoe Basin for several weeks now. Keeping temperatures well below average and furthermore helping preserve the Sierra snowpack. While this may delay the opening of many area mountain bike trails, I am pleased to still see snow on the mountains. The famous “t” on Mt. Tallac has retained much snow to date and most tributaries are still heavily flowing. All been said, I believe the snowy mountains will keep Californians thinking about next ski season. A few Heavenly ski rental shops have closed due the recent recession, however many local ski companies keep high expectations for the coming ski season. If all turns out right, we might just be renting some Heavenly ski rentals next year!!!

Better Late than Never

March 31, 2009

Most people were just about getting used to the warm weather and the idea that spring could come early. They have begun to put their powder skis in storage and have been busting out their bikes. This spell of spring weather was nice but short lived. Getting 14 inches in one night at the end of March is better than Christmas. Not only did we get hit once but the following days were followed up by 8 inches the day after and 12 the following day. Needless to say the bikes were quickly put away for powder skis. The temperature has managed to stay down keeping the snow in excellent condition. With all this amazing powder this late in the year it’s a great time to try demo powder skis to see if you are going to make any big purchases during the off season.

What better way to take a break from the slopes then to go snowmobiling! After indulging in the powder we have been blessed with here at Vail the past two weeks, my knees and back were aching for a break. With some out of town guests to entertain we headed out of Vail on Highway 26 towards Leadville. We ended up at Alpine Tours – a local snowmobiling and dog sledding outfit. With both novice and long-time snowmobiles in our group I was nervous they would not be able to accommodate our various needs. To my pleasant surprise, however, the guides were fantastic and catered to our group with great enthusiasm. The views along our ride were breath taking and we were able to explore so much terrain on the sleds. Alpine Tours was very reasonably priced and the service was excellent. They are also known for the exceptional care they give to their sled dogs. We could not have been happier with our day off from skiing!

Renting ski equipment for my family in the ski shops in Vail and Beaver Creek Colorado have been a disaster in the past. On our annual trip to Vail this year, for the first time I had my skis delivered to me from a great ski rental delivery shop in Vail. What a breeze it was, never again will I rent my ski equipment another way.

Snow Gods Have Answered

March 27, 2009

After a long period of warm weather the conditions on the mountain had started to deteriorate but that’s all behind us now! Several inches of snow in the last few days have made it seem like December again. I was so stoked for all this new weather I went to a local Telluride ski shop and took out some wider skis. It may be late March but you gotta ski what the conditions call for. I went with a Rossignol Phantom 80 to keep me on top of the fresh stuff. It’s soft enough to be forgiving when it gets choppy but has a wood core and vertical sidewalls to stay stable on groomers as well. Hope all the other resorts are getting hit as hard as we are, see you out there!
